It is a known fact that as one ages, the skin becomes less elastic due to reduction in production of collagen and elastin protein. Gravity also plays a part, constantly pulling down the skin. This leads to sagging eyelids.
Drooping eyelids hide a person’s beautiful eyes and can make them look constantly tired. For those who face this problem and would like a more alert appearance, blepharoplasty is an option to consider.
Blepharoplasty Surgery
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that is carried out on the eyelids. It is done to fix the problem of drooping eyelids. Not only is this an aesthetic issue, drooping eyelids can also lead to eyesight problems for some people, especially the aged. Blepharoplasty helps in fixing this. It can also correct issues like puffiness and fine wrinkles.
Preparing For Blepharoplasty Surgery
Blepharoplasty begins with an initial consultation with Dr. Feng. It is best for those who are in overall good health, and so the patient’s health condition is determined by Dr. Feng during the consultation. She also checks the eyes of the patient, tests their vision, and determines if there are any other eye-related issues.
The patient will discuss their aesthetic needs and goals with Dr. Feng, and she will go over the procedure and the recovery process in greater detail. Photographs of the eyelids are taken to help the doctor plan the surgery.
Blood thinners need to be stopped prior to the surgery, and smokers have to stop smoking many days prior. This will help to avoid the risk of any surgical or post-surgical complications.
How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?
Blepharoplasty is done as an outpatient procedure and is a minor surgery. Local anesthetic is used on the eye region to create a numbing effect before the procedure is carried out. The procedure takes an hour or two depending on the exact details of the procedure; in some cases, all four eyelids must be corrected, while in others, only a single lid must be corrected.
The upper eyelids will be operated on first. The surgeon makes an incision on the natural fold between the eyelid and the area below the eyebrow. She removes excess skin, tightens sagging muscle tissue, and then closes the incision.
On the lower eyelids, an incision is made either inside the lower lid or just beneath the lash line. Excess skin is removed, and excess fat is either removed or repositioned to even out the area. The incision is then closed.
The Healing Process
Instructions for adequate care of the eyes will be given by Dr. Feng. Follow-up visits will be required so that she can check on how the healing process is going.
Ice packs and eye drops are prescribed for use after the blepharoplasty procedure. Within a week or so, the swelling in the area starts to reduce. The results of the procedure can be more easily seen at this point. The appearance of the eyes is improved, as is the overall facial appearance.
