Dysport is an injection of abobotulinumtoxinA (Botulinum toxin type A) that helps smooth away fine lines and wrinkles on the face. The appeal of Dysport is that the appearance of wrinkles can be minimized without the need for the long and painful recovery periods associated with surgery.
Wrinkles are formed by the repetitive movement of facial muscles to produce facial expressions. Dysport is a prescription injection that suppresses communication signals between the nerves and the facial muscles. In this manner, muscle activity reduces and contraction of the muscles is temporarily suspended. As a result, the skin is able to lie flat and smooth.
When we talk about Dysport, this may also make you think of Botox. Botox is another product made using the Botulinum toxin and works in a similar way to get rid of wrinkles. Although Dysport and Botox both suppress muscle contractions, there are a few differences between them:
• Dysport is more diluted than Botox, which can cause it to spread over a larger area and thus be useful in treating broader problem areas. Greater diffusion means fewer injections and less discomfort.
• Dysport has a lower protein content than Botox. Less protein means the formation of fewer antibodies by the body to interfere with its operation.
• In view of its greater dilution, if a patient has had Botox in the past and their body is accustomed to a certain number of Botox units, the number of Dysport units to be injected will likely increase.
• Dysport is a third as strong as Botox, meaning that a more natural look can be accomplished with Dysport than with Botox.
The Dysport Injection Procedure
Taking only 10 to 20 minutes, the procedure features injections at about five points above the eyebrows (depending on the specifics of each case). These injection sites are carefully marked before the injections are delivered. Local or topical anesthetic may be helpful but is often not required.
You can get back to your day within 15 minutes of the completion of the Dysport procedure. More than half of patients notice results in only two to three days, whereas Botox results typically require around seven to ten days to be visible. The results of Dysport injections can last for up to four months.
To maintain your results, injections have to be repeated after around three months. Missing an injection will not have harmful effects, since Dysport injections have temporary effects.
People with skin infections or who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Dysport should avoid this procedure and should discuss these issues with Dr. Feng.
