If you’re an exercise novice or have been injured working out, then machines are excellent. However, for everyone else, there’s a much better alternative. Free weights offer more muscle recruitment than a machine. When you use a machine such as a leg press, you sit comfortably with little or no need to balance or stabilize the weight. If you perform a squat with dumbbells, then your core and back have to work to protect your spine, and your ankles, knees, and hips have to work to balance as well as drive the weight up. Using free weights makes the exercise much more applicable to real life. Of course, working out under the direction of a certified personal trainer is the safest and most effective way to maximize your workout time.
