Your workout may be over, but don’t think you’re done burning calories. The rate of burn depends on the intensity of your workout. Exercise afterburn or calories expended above normal resting state is called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Think of it as the energy your body uses to return to its pre-workout state. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 48 hours for the body to recover, however EPOC is mostly dependent on intensity of the workout. Whether you’re doing heavy resistance training or performing intervals during an indoor cycling class doesn’t matter. You will get the benefit long afterwards, as long as you’re exercising at a high level of intensity.
