The Rhytidectomy or Facelift is a surgical procedure designed to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance by repositioning and supporting the deeper facial structures that naturally descend with age. Rather than altering your unique look and who you are, it helps to reveal a smoother jawline, firmer and more defined neckline, and more defined facial contours while preserving your natural expression. In other words, the facelift is the art of turning back the clock without changing the face you and others know. The goal is to help you reflect how youthful you still feel inside, but don’t reveal when you look in the mirror.
The Rhytidectomy is one of my favorite surgical procedures because it requires tremendous skill, precision, attention to detail, and artistry. It is life-changing for patients due to restored confidence, a greater sense of beauty and a renewed sense of youthfulness. My advanced microsurgery skills and techniques coupled with decades of experience have enabled me to develop my own unique methods for performing deep plane facelifts with very natural results. Many of my patients comment that I am able to make them look better than they have ever looked without changing the natural essence of what they used to look like when they were much younger.
I understand beauty, symmetry, balance and youthfulness. A facelift is not about pulling or tightening loose skin, it’s about getting down to the deepest layers of the face, including the subcutaneous and superficial muscles, and repairing what has aged. Then when I work my way back up to the upper layers and lift the skin and SMAS together, I preserve the blood supply and create a long-lasting, natural and very beautiful result for my patients. Some of the unique characteristics that I take into consideration when planning my facelift procedures are the eyes (upper and lower lids), upper lip (which lengthens with age thus covering the upper teeth), and fat grafting to the cheekbones (for greater contour).
Depending upon the amount of skin aging, sun damage, depth and amount of wrinkling, there are several common procedures which are added to the facelift procedure. For the eyes, it may be an Upper and/or Lower Blepharoplasty. For the forehead, it may be a Brow Lift or Hairline Advancement. For hollow cheeks or thin lips, it may be Fat Grafting. Dr. Feng is masterful at knowing what will enhance your appearance the most to enable her to make the proper recommendations during your 2 hour consultation appointment.
Healing time is very important to achieving a great result with very minimal signs of scars. The faster a patient heals, the better the quality of the scars and the sooner normal activity can be resumed. This is a very important consideration for the numerous out-of-state patients who come to Feng Clinic for this procedure.
The healing time for the face is the quickest of all body parts. Depending on age, nutrition, adequate sleep, oxygen delivery, and little to no inflammation in the body the usual healing time is 10 to 14 days. Beginning in the recovery room immediately following surgery, each patient is given a FengFit® protein smoothie of their choice and at the time of discharge, they receive 2 quarts of fresh FengFit® Plant-Based soups to begin their healing journey. Dr. Feng is adamant that proper healing begins with good nutrition and therefore, she developed FengFit® PlantBased Cuisine in 2011. Today, Dr. Feng’s food is sold in 11 Heinen’s Supermarkets in the Cleveland area.
The first week of healing following facelift surgery is the most critical. Therefore, Dr. Feng’s standard post-op protocol involves 6 60-minute hyperbaric oxygen sessions, 6 red light treatments, and 2 oxygen facials. These treatments help to speed up recovery time and begin the day after surgery so the patient is seen on a daily basis. Most out-of-state patients plan on being in Cleveland for 2 weeks.
Whenever you look in the mirror and don't like what you see. There is no perfect time or age to do a facelift. Everyone ages differently for a variety of reasons. If your face shows signs of aging or you feel like you look angry, sad or tired, then you can benefit from this procedure. Some of my facelift patients have been as young as 42 and the oldest so far was 88.
The procedure can last between 4 to 8 hours depending what is being done. If the eyes are included or upper lip shortening or fat grafting, it will take longer.
With a healthy lifestyle including good nutrition, adequate sleep, exercise, bio-identical hormones and minimal stress the results should last 10 to 15 years. You will still look years younger as your face continues to age, but the more you can do to slow down the process, the better.
A skin-only traditional facelift primarily tightens and removes loose skin. The results only last 2 to 3 years and the outcome is often very noticeable because it does not look very natural. Lesser experienced plastic surgeons who are not as familiar with the underlying deep structures of the face are more comfortable doing a traditional facelift. When it comes to cosmetic surgery, experience and skill matter.
I have always said that you get what you pay for. The cost of my facelift procedure is between $30,000 - $45,000 depending on how many procedures are being done; face, neck, eyes, lip shortening, fat grafting, open neck lift or closed neck lift, or laser resurfacing. Another variable is whether it is a male or female as the male face is always much larger. The price for this procedure also depends on the years of experience and expertise of the surgeon and also the market they reside in. Obviously, experienced plastic surgeons in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas charge much more for the same procedure than in Cleveland, Ohio.
Not necessarily depending on what was done and how it was done. Sometimes a more extensive correction is required which can increase the cost.
How do you know they don't? A facelift performed the right way by a skilled plastic surgeon should not be noticeable. I particularly like doing facelifts on men because they present different challenges. Their faces are larger, the hairlines are different and less likely to hide incisions and the sideburns cannot be altered.
Due to the type of anesthetics we use, it is no problem for several reasons. First and foremost, all of our anesthesiologists are highly experienced board certified doctors, not nurse anesthetists. Next, we don't use anesthetic gas to keep patients asleep. Instead, we have you breathing a combination of oxygen and air. This is much healthier for you than breathing gas. Then through an IV in your arm, you are receiving very fast-acting anesthetics that completely leave your system within 6 minutes after the surgery ends. This allows you to wake up quickly with no nausea and no hangover effect. You are alert and in control of yourself going into the Recovery Room.
