It is a known fact that as one ages, the skin becomes less elastic due to reduction in production of collagen and elastin protein. Gravity also plays a part, constantly pulling down the skin. This leads to sagging eyelids.

Drooping eyelids hide a person’s beautiful eyes and can make them look constantly tired. For those who face this problem and would like a more alert appearance, blepharoplasty is an option to consider.

Blepharoplasty Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that is carried out on the eyelids. It is done to fix the problem of drooping eyelids. Not only is this an aesthetic issue, drooping eyelids can also lead to eyesight problems for some people, especially the aged. Blepharoplasty helps in fixing this. It can also correct issues like puffiness and fine wrinkles.

Preparing For Blepharoplasty Surgery

Blepharoplasty begins with an initial consultation with Dr. Feng. It is best for those who are in overall good health, and so the patient’s health condition is determined by Dr. Feng during the consultation. She also checks the eyes of the patient, tests their vision, and determines if there are any other eye-related issues.

The patient will discuss their aesthetic needs and goals with Dr. Feng, and she will go over the procedure and the recovery process in greater detail. Photographs of the eyelids are taken to help the doctor plan the surgery.

Blood thinners need to be stopped prior to the surgery, and smokers have to stop smoking many days prior. This will help to avoid the risk of any surgical or post-surgical complications.

How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?

Blepharoplasty is done as an outpatient procedure and is a minor surgery. Local anesthetic is used on the eye region to create a numbing effect before the procedure is carried out. The procedure takes an hour or two depending on the exact details of the procedure; in some cases, all four eyelids must be corrected, while in others, only a single lid must be corrected.

The upper eyelids will be operated on first. The surgeon makes an incision on the natural fold between the eyelid and the area below the eyebrow. She removes excess skin, tightens sagging muscle tissue, and then closes the incision.

On the lower eyelids, an incision is made either inside the lower lid or just beneath the lash line. Excess skin is removed, and excess fat is either removed or repositioned to even out the area. The incision is then closed.

The Healing Process

Instructions for adequate care of the eyes will be given by Dr. Feng. Follow-up visits will be required so that she can check on how the healing process is going.

Ice packs and eye drops are prescribed for use after the blepharoplasty procedure. Within a week or so, the swelling in the area starts to reduce. The results of the procedure can be more easily seen at this point. The appearance of the eyes is improved, as is the overall facial appearance.

Men and women have different kinds of chests. Women have rounder and fuller breasts, whereas men tend to have a flatter upper body. When men begin to develop feminine-looking breasts, it can be a cause of shame and embarrassment. They may begin to feel emasculated, and this may take a toll on their self-confidence and how they participate socially.

Do you struggle with oversized male breasts? Does it make you feel uncomfortable in social situations? To correct the appearance of your chest, you can get a male breast reduction performed. This surgical procedure corrects excessive breast tissue in men (also known as gynecomastia) and can also address oversized areolae.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia may result from a variety of factors. It could be a result of one's genes, obesity, hormonal changes, various illnesses, or even from the usage of certain drugs.

How can one identify gynecomastia? Gynecomastia patients have an excess of fat localized in their breast area, excessive glandular-tissue development, and excess breast skin. These signs help one understand if they require a male breast reduction or not.

Is Male Breast Reduction Right for You?

Men who have failed to benefit from non-surgical breast-reduction options make good candidates for the procedure. Non-smokers and individuals in sound health heal the best. Men who have realistic expectations from the procedure are ideal candidates.

In order to have this operation carried out, the patient’s breast development must have stabilized. For this reason, it cannot be done on teens.

How Does One Prepare for Male Breast Reduction?

A patient who plans to undergo male breast reduction should be tested for any existing health conditions that may complicate their recovery. Smokers will be asked to avoid smoking in the weeks leading up to the procedure and during recovery. In addition, patients are requested to stop taking certain medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs.

Gynecomastia is an outpatient procedure. It takes a couple of hours to be completed, and you can return home the same day. It is advisable to arrange for a caretaker for the night who can cater to your needs after the operation, since you will still be waking up from the anesthesia.

The Male Breast-Reduction Procedure

Traditionally, during male breast reduction, an excision is made to remove excess glandular breast tissue with the help of a scalpel. Male breast-reduction surgery may also involve liposuction to remove excess fat depending on the individual’s recontouring needs.

The results of the surgery are immediately visible. However, after the surgery is complete, there will also be a degree of post-surgical swelling and bruising, which will make it harder to see the full results of the procedure. Once swelling and bruising have ameliorated and healing is complete, you will be able to enjoy the full results of your male breast reduction.

Achieve a More Masculine Chest

During a consultation with Dr. Lu-Jean Feng, a board-certified plastic surgeon with numerous satisfied patients, the two of you will discuss male breast reduction in further detail. Dr. Feng will answer your questions and develop a surgical plan to help achieve your goals. To schedule your consultation, contact our office.

The nose is the most prominent feature of the face. Unfortunately, not every individual is happy with their nose. Rhinoplasty surgery is the solution when a person would like to change the size, angle, shape, proportions, or overall look of their nose.

Rhinoplasty Surgery to Correct Nasal Issues

Commonly known as a nose job, rhinoplasty is one of the most common types of plastic surgery. It is used to change the shape of the nose or improve its functionality by modifying the bone, cartilage, and/or soft tissue.

There are two types of rhinoplasty. While cosmetic rhinoplasty improves the appearance of the nose, functional rhinoplasty restores the function of the nose (typically improving airflow and breathing).

When the surgery is to improve the appearance of the nose, one should wait until the nasal bones are fully grown. Usually, the nasal bones are finished growing around the age of 16 for girls and age 18 for boys.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty can address many aspects of the nose, changing its shape and proportions and making it look more defined.

For those who are dissatisfied with the look of the bridge of their nose, changes can be made to the bridge. It can be widened or narrowed, and these changes can have a huge positive impact on the nose’s overall appearance.

A nasal hump can be removed from the bridge of the nose. Nasal humps are often quite prominent and can feel embarrassing, and evening out the nasal bridge corrects this issue.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty can shorten a long nasal tip or lengthen a tip that is lacking, raise a drooping nasal tip, or address a tip that is too pointed or rounded.

A crooked nose can also be brought into better alignment, and nostrils can be reduced or enlarged in size as needed.

The Rhinoplasty Process

Rhinoplasty typically begins with the administration of general anesthesia. This will make the patient unconscious so that they do not feel any pain for the duration of the procedure. Incisions are then made to allow Dr. Feng access to the underlying structures.

Based on the location of the incision, the procedure is classified as either open or closed rhinoplasty. When the surgeon makes a small incision in the exterior end of the nasal septum (called the columella), it is classified as open rhinoplasty. When a surgeon makes the incisions inside the nostrils, it is classified as closed rhinoplasty.

After the incisions are made, the cartilage, bones, and soft tissue that make up the architecture of the nose are altered in precise ways to achieve the patient’s desired aesthetic goals. In some cases, grafts are used to strengthen and change the region.

Once all the changes have been made, the skin is redraped (in cases when it has been lifted) and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Choose Your Surgeon Wisely

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is one of the most complex procedures in cosmetic surgery. Because of this, it is vital that you choose the right plastic surgeon for the procedure. Dr. Lu-Jean Feng is a board-certified plastic surgeon with a high degree of skill and numerous satisfied rhinoplasty patients. To schedule your consultation, contact our office.

Have you noticed how fat always tends to navigate toward and settle down around the midriff? The worst part is that once it settles down there, it’s very hard to get rid of. You’ve tried exercise regimens, diets, and everything you can think of to slim, tone, and tighten your belly – but to no avail.

You don’t have to live with a saggy tummy just because traditional methods were ineffective. A tummy tuck is the most effective way to contour your stomach, removing excess fat, tightening loose skin, and rejoining sagging muscles. It also enhances your posture.

Could your tummy use a tuck? It could if you have a sagging belly that hangs low over your midriff. If you want quick and guaranteed results, this procedure may be the perfect choice.

What Is a Tummy Tuck Like?

Tummy tucks are a safe option with long-lasting benefits. At the start, anesthesia is administered to ensure that the procedure is comfortable. A hip-to-hip incision is then made in the pubic area. A second incision is created around the navel, allowing for more changes higher up on the abdomen.

Drooping muscle tissue and fascia are tightened with the help of internal sutures. Rejoining the sagging abdominal muscles helps to strengthen the abdominal wall.

Liposuction is used to suck out pockets of excess fat, recontouring the region. The navel is repositioned, and excess skin is removed. The remaining skin is tightened. Once the incisions are sutured closed, a tight bandage is placed around the area.

The Recovery Process After a Tummy Tuck

You will be able to return home the same day as your tummy tuck. Once you are home, you will need to rest and take some time off from work. It will be especially important to avoid any strenuous activities during your recovery period, including sports, strenuous exercise, and heavy lifting. You may not be able to stand fully upright for a time while you are healing.

Part of the healing process will involve dealing with bruising and swelling in the region. Ice packs can be used to help ameliorate the swelling. A post-surgical elastic garment must be worn for a time in order to keep swelling down and support tissues as they heal.

At some point, you will need to come in for a follow-up appointment in order to have your stitches removed. At this appointment, Dr. Feng will ensure that healing is going as expected and without complications.

Once the swelling has fully disappeared, you will be able to enjoy the finals results of your tummy-tuck procedure. The area will be tighter, more contoured, and better defined.

Are your sagging eyelids obstructing your field of view? Eye-lifting creams, lotions, serums, and other products can only do so much to help lift sagging eyelids, and they are not permanent fixes. Upper-eyelid surgery, or upper blepharoplasty, can correct your drooping eyelids, making you look more youthful and improving your field of view. If you're in need of upper-eyelid surgery, you'll need to learn more about the procedure, especially the recovery period, so that you can be properly prepared.

What Is Upper-Eyelid Surgery?

Upper-eyelid surgery is a plastic-surgery procedure that treats upper-eyelid sagging. It involves removal of excess eyelid skin, tightening of loose muscle tissue, removal of excess fat, and tightening of the remaining skin. During an upper-eyelid surgery, Dr. Feng will first administer anesthesia in order to ensure that you are free of any pain or discomfort during the procedure. She will then make markings on your upper eyelids to mark off the areas that need to be removed or corrected. Tiny incisions will be carefully made in the natural creases at the tops of your upper eyelids. Dr. Feng will remove and adjust tissues as needed to lift and recontour the upper eyelids. At the end of the surgery, the incisions will be sutured closed with the help of dissolvable stitches. An antibiotic ointment will be applied topically on the surgical areas.

What Is Upper-Eyelid Surgery Recovery Like?

It will be important that you arrange for a ride home after your procedure from a friend or a family member. Because the tissues of your eyelids will be temporarily weakened, you will not be able to drive yourself home. You can expect some mild discomfort immediately after the surgery. Dr. Feng may prescribe some pain medication for you to take, if needed. Most people will need only non-prescription painkillers, and narcotics are rarely necessary. However, if you're in too much pain or your vision starts to change, you must consult Dr. Feng immediately. It may take up to a few weeks for the healing to fully complete. During the recovery period, your eye areas will appear bruised and red. You might have swollen eyes, especially during the first few days after surgery. While your eyelids are healing, you should not wear any eye makeup in order to avoid irritating the areas. On the first day of your recovery, you will have to apply cold compresses every hour that you are awake for at least 10 to 15 minutes each time. This will help soothe the eyelids, reduce post-surgical swelling, and keep post-surgical bruising to a minimum. On the second day of recovery, you will have to apply cold compresses every few hours and for 10 to 15 minutes each time. After two days, warm compresses will have to be applied to ensure faster healing.

People have become more and more inclined to get facelifts to restore youthfulness to their faces. Anybody considering a facelift has a range of facelift procedures to choose from. It's best to find out more about your options before you commit to the surgery. The deep-plane facelift is among the most preferred cosmetic surgical techniques. The deep-plane facelift allows Dr. Feng increased access to the neck and jaw area, making it easier to treat the sagging skin around the face as well as the neck. Dr. Feng can tackle the problem areas more effectively, resulting in a more lifted face. The deep-plane facelift is also excellent for treating the mid-face area. This facelift option can give patients more accentuated cheekbones and a better-defined jawline. Individuals who struggle with stubborn signs of aging prefer the deep-plane facelift technique for this very purpose. Additionally, the results of a deep-plane facelift are longer-lasting. Unlike certain other facelift techniques, a deep-plane facelift does not make your face look unnatural or overdone. The results are subtle and understated yet incredibly effective. After surgery, the face looks as natural as it did before, only younger, fresher, and more relaxed. Traditional facelift procedures are unable to address the underlying signs of aging that lie deeper under the layers of the skin. Deep-plane facelift surgery enables Dr. Feng to correct these problems at the root by treating the deeper tissues. This technique lifts the deep plane, which lies between the SMAS layer and the facial muscles. People who have a deep-plane facelift performed are less likely to require a "tuck up," or revision, procedure than those who have other facelift techniques performed.

Are You a Good Candidate for the Deep-Plane Facelift?

Facelifts are generally performed on individuals between the ages of 50 and 60. There have been cases of younger and older people having them performed, too. If you’re a healthy and active person without any overarching health complaints and are unhappy with your aging appearance, the deep-plane facelift should be right for you. During a consultation with Dr. Feng, the patient should disclose whether they've had any prior cosmetic surgeries or non-invasive cosmetic treatments done. Any medication they take, their medical history, and any tobacco usage should be honestly discussed so that Dr. Feng can devise a personalized treatment plan with these in mind.

Meet with Dr. Feng

The deep-plane facelift surgery requires a certain degree of skill and expertise on the part of the surgeon performing the surgery, since they will need to be able to correctly manipulate the deeper layers of facial tissues. It is important to choose a qualified and experienced surgeon to perform the procedure. Is your hairbrush tangled with hair most of the time? Do you find that hairs fall out every time you wash your hair? Hair loss can be a frustrating experience that can add years to our appearance and cause high levels of stress, which only causes more hair fall. So what can you do to fight this issue? There are tons of products out there that claim to be able to prevent/fight hair loss, but they don’t always work. Fortunately, with a PRP hair-restoration treatment, you can have a full head of hair again. PRP treatment (platelet-rich plasma treatment) is a medical procedure that has been shown to be effective in preventing hair fall and promoting healthy hair growth. This treatment involves drawing blood from the patient, processing it, and injecting it into the scalp. Why does this treatment use the patient’s own blood? Our blood is composed of two main components, namely red blood cells and plasma. It is this plasma that is required for PRP treatment. Plasma consists of platelets and white blood cells, both of which are rich in growth factors. These growth factors stimulate the hair follicles and promote the growth of hair root cells, also known as papilla cells. For many years, plasma has been used in the medical field for treating a variety of health issues such as aging signs, arthritis, and injured ligaments. This is because it promotes the growth of not just hair root cells but cells in general.

What Is the PRP Procedure Like?

PRP treatment for hair loss requires about three treatments for the average patient. Each treatment is administered about four to six weeks apart. In addition, follow-up treatments should be administered after every four to six months. The first step of PRP treatment involves drawing the patient’s blood. Usually, about 20 to 25 ml is taken from the arm. This blood is then placed into a machine called a centrifuge, which spins at a great speed in order to separate fluids of varying densities. After spending approximately 10 minutes inside the centrifuge, the plasma is separated from the red blood cells. To be more specific, the blood is separated into three layers: the red blood cells, the platelet-poor plasma, and the platelet-rich plasma. Finally, the platelet-rich plasma is injected into the scalp with a syringe to stimulate the hair follicles and promote hair growth.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for PRP Treatment?

While virtually anyone who suffers from hair loss can benefit from PRP treatment, patients who are in the early stages of hair loss are the best candidates. These people tend to have the best response to the treatment.

Do you want to find a remedy to treat your frown lines and make your skin appear healthy and youthful? Try out Dysport. Dysport is an FDA-approved wrinkle-reduction injectable. It is recommended for use in individuals below the age of 65 to treat wrinkles, making skin look smoother. Dysport is very similar to Botox injections and contains botulinum toxin type A, which paralyzes the muscles that contract to cause wrinkles in the brow and forehead area. It blocks the neural pathway from the nerve to the muscle, improving upon fine and moderate lines in the face.

How Do Facial Wrinkles Form?

Whenever we move our facial muscles for actions and expressions, the skin on our face contracts and expands accordingly. Dynamic lines form in our face during the time from contraction until release. These creases lines deepen with time and repetition, changing from dynamic wrinkles to static wrinkles.

How Dysport Works

Dysport blocks nerve activity when injected and prevents your overactive muscles from moving too much. Allowing these contracted muscles to relax means that the overlying skin can return to a smooth and flat state.

Good Candidates for Dysport

The ideal Dysport candidate will have mild to moderate wrinkles on their forehead, between their eyebrows, or at the sides of their eyes. It can also be used to treat various other facial lines. Patients with severe wrinkles may be better served with a dermal filler or surgical procedure. Patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients of Dysport should steer clear of these injectables. The same goes for individuals who experience adverse reactions with cow’s milk protein and botulinum toxin products. If you have a skin infection on the site you plan to get your Dysport injection in, it’s best to avoid Dysport treatment and discuss alternative treatment options with Dr. Feng.

The Injection Procedure

The areas to be treated using Dysport are first cleaned with an alcohol wipe to prevent infection. The plastic surgeon may choose to numb the areas with a topical anesthetic or forego it depending on the patient’s needs; most surgeons skip using a numbing cream before injecting Dysport into the patient’s skin. Typically, five sites encompassing the upper and central area of the eyebrows receive an injection of Dysport. The session lasts only about 10 to 20 minutes, and you can resume your daily activities immediately afterward.

What Are the Results Like?

The full results of a Dysport treatment will be visible within around two to three days and will last for three to four months. In some cases, it can be slightly longer-lasting than a Botox treatment. Common side-effects may include temporary swelling and bruising at the injection sites.

But, as effective as cosmetic surgery can be, there is a huge disadvantage: facelift surgery is a complex medical procedure that requires downtime. This means that your daily schedule is disrupted; you cannot go to work for days or go to the gym. You must rest in bed and have someone take care of you. This disadvantage stops many people who wish to look younger from receiving this treatment. However, with Restylane, a type of dermal filler, there is no downtime, and the procedure is still extremely effective. Read on to find out more about Restylane, how it works, what the benefits are, and if it’s a suitable solution for you.

What Is Restylane and How Does It Work?

Restylane is a type of dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural sugar compound found in our body. The hyaluronic acid contains water, which helps in forming and maintaining volume under the surface of your skin. Restylane is injected into the skin to treat wrinkles and lines to and add volume to certain areas of the face. In most cases, it is used to treat facial areas such as the lips, cheeks, and around the mouth and nose. This treatment was approved by the FDA back in 2003 and since then has been used to reverse signs of aging in people all over the world. The procedure for Restylane is fairly simple and usually takes no more than an hour. The exact duration depends on which area is to be treated and how big the area is. Dr. Feng may give you local anesthesia before the treatment if required in order to numb the areas. Dr. Feng will then inject Restylane into the various injection points. You don’t have to stay in the clinic after the treatment and can go home immediately. There is no downtime required, so you can resume your normal daily activities without having to take rest. However, it is recommended that you avoid direct sun exposure for a time. You will start seeing results in just one week after the treatment. The results can last for about six to eighteen months, depending on the kind of Restylane you get and which area was treated. You will have to come in for follow-up treatments to maintain the results.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Restylane?

You must be at least 21 years of age to receive Restylane treatments. Mostly, people between the ages of 35 and 65 opt for Restylane fillers, as these are the ages where facial signs of aging are most prominent. If you are currently taking a blood thinner, or if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, then you may need to avoid taking the treatment for safety concerns. Speak with Dr. Feng regarding this.
